AFLAJ Farmhouse

Location: Qatar

Scope : Architecture and Interior Design

Client: Confidential

BUA: 1,835 sq.m.

Status: Completed March 2023

Located at the heart of a 150-hectare plot, this project envisions a distinctive farmhouse for a distinguished client, complemented by auxiliary buildings such as a gym and guesthouses. The design embraces the raw beauty of the Qatari desert, integrating traditional influences with contemporary architectural principles. At the core of any Rawdah or meadow lies water—the lifegiving element that sustains vegetation in Qatar’s arid climate.

The project draws inspiration from the ancient Falaj system, a network of water channels that have historically shaped settlement patterns, supported sustainable agriculture, and fostered community cooperation. In this farmhouse, a modern interpretation of the Aflaj system defines the architectural layout. Three water canals extend from the central water corridor, structuring the arrangement of the main Farm Villa and three semi independent buildings: the Majlis, Gym, and Guesthouse. These channels not only provide a natural cooling effect but also enhance the experience of outdoor spaces, reinforcing the connection between architecture and landscape.

FOUR COURTYARDS FARMHOUSE

Location: Qatar

Scope: Architecture and Interior Design

Client: Confidential

BUA: 2,320 sq.m.

Status: Completed January 2023

Located in Qatar (exact location is confidential), this Farmhouse is a private development in a plot of approximately 10,000 sqm. The project is composed of a Main Villa building (one level), parking lot, external landscape and access roads. Traditional architecture in Qatar rarely employs complex shapes - rather its complexity is compounded from the juxtaposition of simple shapes. As such, our approach to this project relies on the accumulation of straightforward shapes as a response to the complexity of the program and the needs of modern life generally. The design starts out with the traditional courtyard typology. With a simple transformation, the enclosed open-space is unlocked as it unfolds itself towards the surrounding environment. The result is a versatile U-shape basic block which ensures privacy and shelter all the while extending the interior spaces towards the exterior.

The local architecture is characterised by smooth surfaces, light colors and subtle details and ornaments that blend seeminglessly with the surrounding desert. Within such a monotonous landscape, doors and windows - with their intricate timber and metalwork - stand out as feature elements of the building scape. This combination of smooth rendered surfaces and intricate detailing of architecture elements is derived from the minimalist building techniques that nevertheless provide enduring resistanceto the harsh climate. The proposed design is intended to reflect this spirit of the local architecture. Traditional construction methods shall be studied in-depth to avoid unnecessary pastiche of the previous techniques, but rather to reach an efficient balance between contemporary and traditional architecture; a balance that preserves the welcoming spirit of the vernacular buildings and respond to modern requirements such as mechanical ventilation and electricals

BUA:13,478 sq.m.

Status:In Progress

The building is located in Fox hills, Lusail, in State of Qatar, facing Darb Lusail Boulevard. After completion, it will set a new benchmark for luxurious residences in Lusail. DAL Architects & Designers was invited to conceive a hotel style entrance lobby and a show flat for this residential development, to showcase its aesthetics whilst highlighting its presence in Lusail. Dal Design’s approach is to take a people-centered approach to deliver tailored design solutions that cater to the present and future needs of a locale and its residents. Our team of talented architects and designers implement considerate design choices to bring this concept to reality. Main lobby, rooftop swimming pool and garden, generous balconies, differentiation in the ground floor levels, easy connection to the retail areas, lounges, open staircase and light filled common areas with sustainable fixtures, for example, allow the building dwellers to enjoy lifestyleenhancing amenities of Lusail, while thoughtful planning ensures easy access to bike paths, transit, and retail, creating a sense of place. As a result, residents, neighbors, and passersby alike are drawn together – creating places that truly ‘live’. The interior materials, the fabrics, wall treatments, color combinations, floor tiles and furniture style were selected carefully to work with the luxury Lusail lifestyle; minimalist and modern style with light colors and using the daylight as much as possible.

TUK TUK SAIGON THAI-VIET STREET FOOD RESTAURANT

Location: Bin Mahmoud, Doha, Qatar

Scope: Architecture Design, Interior Design, Programming, Branding and Project

Client: TUK TUK Saigon Restaurant

BUA: 150 sq.m.

Status: Completed November 2022

Intended to become the go-to restaurant for South-east Asian food in Doha, Tuk Tuk Saigon was envisioned by the owner as a place where one could experience the full sense of traditional Thai and Vietnamese cuisine and atmosphere. With the subtle use of decorative elements that evoke the intended ambiance, such as the typical neon signage and corrugated metal panels used as signage booths, the Architect infused the space with a spirit of traditional Thai & Vietnamese interiors. The many string lights and paper lanterns visible from the outside are imported directly from Thailand and Vietnam. They quickly become the focus of attention for visitors, as their glowing light fills the space with an array of warm colors. The lanterns hang from the high ceiling at the entrance, giving a glimpse of the mezzanine above to the entering visitors and adding richness and vivacity to a restaurant that’s intended to welcome large scale events and gathering despite its limited size.

The design process, given the short timeline, had to be rigorous and effective - starting from the main kitchen, which combines both Thai and Vietnamese cuisine in a very tight space. DAL Architects collaborated with Interior Designer Puri Design and local kitchen specialist to achieve the most efficient layout. Despite the singular staircase up to the mezzanine floor, services such the crucial dumbwaiter and visitor bathrooms have been tucked away intelligently so as to preserve privacy and a maximum number of tables. Since the onset of the project, DAL Architects worked on fast-paced rhythm and coordinated intensively with all stakeholders and contractors to ensure timely delivery, with a grand opening a few days before the World Cup kick-off!

ABU NAKHLA WATER RESERVOIR IN QATAR

Location: Abu Nakhla, Doha, Qatar

Scope: Research

Client: -

BUA: -

Status:-

Abu Nakhla reservoir, originally a treated wastewater pond on Doha’s outskirts, has evolved over decades into a rare ecological habitat, home to diverse wildlife and migratory birds. Now bordering the expanding city, it faces threats from seepage and drainage, despite being designated as part of Doha’s new Green Belt in the Qatar National Master Plan.

This project, developed through research and design studios at Qatar University’s Master’s program in Sustainable Urban and Landscape Design, advocates for the preservation of Abu Nakhla as a vital ecological and public asset. Drawing on regional precedents like Al Wathba Wetlands in Abu Dhabi, the work proposes scenarios that support biodiversity, education, food production, and leisure—backed by ongoing outreach and the formation of the Friends of Abu Nakhla initiative.
